Platonism in mathematics ( 1935 )

چکیده
With your permission, I shall now address you on the subject of the present situation in research in the foundations of mathematics. Since there remain open questions in this field, I am not in a position to paint a definitive picture of it for you. But it must be pointed out that the situation is not so critical as one could think from listening to those who speak of a foundational crisis. From certain points of view, this expression can be justified; but it could give rise to the opinion that mathematical science is shaken at its

متن کاملJust what is Full-Blooded Platonism?
Mark Balaguer has, in his Platonism and Anti-Platonism in Mathematics [Balaguer, 1998], given us an intriguing new brand of platonism, which he calls, plenitudinous platonism, or more colourfully, full-blooded platonism. In this paper, I argue that Balaguer’s attempts to characterise full-blooded platonism fail. They are either too strong, with untoward consequences we all reject, or too weak, ...
متن کاملThe Conceivability of Platonism†
It is widely believed that platonists face a formidable problem: that of providing an intelligible account of mathematical knowledge. The problem is that we seem unable, if the platonist is right, to have the causal relationships with the objects of mathematics without which knowledge of these objects seems unintelligible. The standard platonist response to this challenge is either to deny that...
متن کاملMathematical Platonism: from objects to patterns
The aim of this paper is to reveal the tacit assumptions of the logicist and structuralist theories on the nature of cardinal numbers. The privileged background theory is the representational theory of language with its main conjecture about necessary correspondence between metaphysical structure of reality and logical structure of language. In such a theory of language we meet a number of thes...
متن کاملMathematics : Truth and Fiction ?
Mark Balaguer's project in this book is extremely ambitious; he sets out to defend both platonism and fictionalism about mathematical entities. Moreover, Balaguer argues that at the end of the day, platonism and fictionalism are on an equal footing. Not content to leave the matter there, however, he advances the anti-metaphysical conclusion that there is no fact of the matter about the existenc...
